Why Crete?
Crete is the largest and most southern of the Greek islands, with over 1000km of Mediterranean coastline. It’s dramatic landscape varies from sandy beaches to snow-capped mountains and spectacular gorges, offering everything from sea sports to hiking, biking and paragliding. The island is seeped in history, with famous Minoan archaeological sites and Roman, Venetian, Ottoman and Byzantine influences.
Stavros is a sleepy village with a beautiful, sandy beach, crystal clear sea, delicious tavernas and mountain goats grazing on the coastal mountains. The enclosed bay, with its mix of shallow and deeper water, is great for paddling, snorkelling and fishing. Around Stavros you’ll find great mountain walks, Byzantine churches, monasteries, gorges, caves and olive groves.
Chania is the second largest and probably the most beautiful city in Crete. It’s only 17km away from Stavros and easily accessible by bus or car. The city has a beautiful Venetian harbour, great restaurants, markets, museums and a couple of beaches. You can also go out on a glass bottom boat, try scuba diving, take a boat to Santorini or sign up to excursions round the island.
