Things to do in and around Chania

Chania is a beautiful city with a lovely Old Town round the harbour. Being the second largest city in Crete, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, tavernas, cafes, clubs and bars. There are so many things to do in Chania, we can’t possibly list them all, so here is a selection of top activities to whet your appetite.


Enjoy the venetian harbour

The waterfront restaurants provide a comfortable spot to take in the beauty of the harbour and old port. Although stunning in the bright sunlight, the harbour comes alive at night with lights reflecting off the water and buskers and stalls in the street.

Experience a Cretan market

Soak up the atmosphere of a traditional Cretan market - the hustle and bustle, the sounds and smells, the colour and life. Chania’s covered market in the centre of town is open daily and sells fresh food and all kinds of Greek delicacies. The Saturday outside market is a delicious way to get a flavour of Cretan life. The location of the Saturday market can vary so please ask for details on arrival.

Book a tour or boat trip

From Chania, you can book a tour to almost anywhere on the island. You can also catch a boat to other Greek islands, such as Santorini. Popular tours include the Samaria Gorge, Knossos, Elafonisi Beach, Gramvousa and Balos Lagoon and Limnoupolis Water Park.

Go scuba diving

The underwater world around Chania is home to caves, unusual rock formations, ancient pottery, loggerhead turtles, octopus, sponges, and occasionally, dolphins, whales and seals. There are a couple of PADI diving schools in Chania where you can sign up to do fun dives.

Check out a museum

Chania has a few museums to choose from. The Archaeological Museum showcases excavations from round Chania and Western Crete. The Maritime Museum has a collection of relics from historic battles of the Greek navy. The Byzantine Museum has mosaics, wall-paintings, sculptures, ceramics and objects of arts. There is also a War Museum and Historical Archives of Crete.

Visit Venizelos Graves

Venizelos Graves sit high on a hilltop 5km outside Chania, on the road back to Stavros. The resting place of Eleftherios K. Venizelos, a Greek national hero who helped to seal the Cretan union with Greece, the Graves have scenic views over city. There is also a lovely cafe that serves delicious Greek coffee and cakes.
